About the National Safety Council

Our Mission

The National Safety Council is America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate – and has been for over 110 years. As a mission-based organization, we work to eliminate the leading causes of preventable death and injury, focusing our efforts on the workplace and roadway. We create a culture of safety to not only keep people safer at work but also beyond the workplace so they can live their fullest lives.

Our Values

  • Be Safe: I commit to keep myself and others safe.
  • Be Bold: I challenge the status quo, to realize greater impact.
  • Be Impactful: I exceed expectations for all those I serve.
  • Be NSC: I collaborate across NSC with trust and respect to achieve NSC results.

NSC convenes frequently in person and virtually through our All-Staff and leadership meetings. Input from our senior leaders, people managers and all of our employees allows us to thrive in strengthening our mission through measurable impact. The NSC Speakers Bureau features more than 20 safety leaders and experts who provide adept insight on safety matters at conferences, webinars, trainings and more across the country.

Our Finances

Throughout 2024, NSC saw its finances increase compared to 2023. NSC revenues – supported by philanthropic donations, government grants and membership dues – have demonstrated a sense of confidence in our work and commitment to safety.

As a mission-driven nonprofit organization, revenue from our programs, services and philanthropic donations fuel our advocacy work so we can help people live their fullest lives. For a breakdown of our financials, please explore the NSC 2024 Statement of Financial Position and NSC 2024 Statement of Activities and Changes in Net Assets.

Driven by Data

NSC compiles Injury Facts®the definitive guide on preventable deaths and injuries in the United States for over 110 years. Our data was mentioned over 15,000 times in the media as a crucial component to thousands of news stories across the globe.

Supported by Philanthropy

As a nonprofit organization, philanthropy generates new opportunities and sustains our relentless focus on making people safer, from the workplace to anyplace.

In 2024, NSC received more than $7 million in philanthropic contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations wanting to make a difference. These funds support research to identify leading causes of fatalities, education to increase awareness and minimize risks, and advocacy to ensure the adoption of safety and incident prevention measures.

From the Workplace to Anyplace

Workplace fatality rates have dramatically decreased since 1928, but improvement in the last decade has mostly stalled. In 2023, over 4,500 workers passed away due to preventable incidents in the workplace – a slight improvement from the year before. NSC enables employers of all sizes to create a culture of safety that goes beyond compliance because compromising safety has no room in the modern, efficient workplace.

Every family, individual and business in this country relies on our nation’s roadways to get to their destination safely. Yet we lost nearly 45,000 people on our roads in 2024. Year by year, NSC strives to excel in assuring safer road conditions, whether that be through legislation, vehicle design, infrastructure innovation and critical education for roadway users.
