Here’s how we made an impact on roadway safety in 2021:

  • Trained over 800,000 drivers through NSC Defensive Driving courses (DDC)
  • Reworked and launched DDC Online 11th Edition with a new mobile-first platform
  • Created an optimization plan for our state and court consumer facing website, drivesafe.com, and implemented a customer feedback survey on all related driver registration webpages
  • Secured renewed commitments from Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Toyota and Volvo in support of Check To Protect, an NSC-led vehicle recall safety program that identified 72,618 open safety recalls in 2021
  • Check To Protect is now featured as the vehicle recall resource in the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF), which is used by thousands of child passenger safety seat technicians across the country; the NDCF is generously funded by AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah and NHTSA
  • Expanded funding from AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah to support the first National Digital Car Seat Check Form efficacy study
  • Renewed driver retraining state contracts with the Massachusetts State Police and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission; secured a five-year renewal with the Cook County Traffic Safety Program
  • Secured and expanded funding from General Motors to continue the DriveitHOME initiative for parents and caregivers of new teen drivers
  • Translated more than 50 DriveitHOME resources into Spanish to better support parents, employers and new teen drivers
  • Developed and piloted a hybrid offering of the National Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification Training including e-learning, virtual and in-person learning components
  • Extended reach of the National Child Passenger Safety Board through the launch of a webinar series, a social media library and enhanced social media efforts; NCPSB reached a record 5.8 million impressions on Facebook in October
  • Developed and launched the Online Mature Driver program, and launched a customer portal for the preventability review program
  • Celebrated the passage of the Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act, which included many provisions long advocated for by NSC and built on the Road to Zero strategy’s three-pillar approach
  • Successfully advocated for inclusion of NSC priorities in the FY21 federal spending legislation adopted by Congress, including OSHA and NIOSH funding, and roadway and impairment policy changes
  • Received a new, three-year cooperative agreement from NHTSA for the support of the Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety grant program
  • Continued the successful efforts of the Road to Zero Equity Task Force, including publishing the Road to Zero statement on equity and launching the Safe, Equitable Mobility webpage
  • Generated 112 million impressions across owned and earned social channels, more than 50,000 downloads and nearly 40,000 page views for the 2021 Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign
  • Held virtual trainings and webinars through the Our Driving Concern program supporting over 2,200 employee participants and a potential reach of more than 5 million employees; this program also received new funding from the Texas Department of Transportation to implement a pedestrian safety initiative
  • Recruited a team of external advisors to begin the process of devising a new NSC Roadway Maturity Model for Fleet Organizations
  • Launched two new, sizeable traffic court programs for the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Commission and the Suffolk County NY Traffic & Parking Violation Agency
  • Worked with the Tribal Injury Prevention Resource Center to create five PSA readouts and FAQ specific to tribal communities, as well as informational sheets for distribution and use on social media
  • Recognized Jerry Landau with the Robert F. Borkenstein Award for his leadership, dedication, knowledge and expertise in the criminal justice and legislative communities, allowing him to save lives by advancing safety policies and practices that prevent drug and alcohol impairment
