About the National Safety Council

Our Mission

The National Safety Council is America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate – and has been for more than 100 years. As a mission-based organization, we work to eliminate the leading causes of preventable death and injury, focusing our efforts on the workplace and roadway. We create a culture of safety to not only keep people safer at work but also beyond the workplace so they can live their fullest lives.

Our Values

  • Be Safe: I commit to keep myself and others safe.
  • Be Bold: I challenge the status quo, to realize greater impact.
  • Be Impactful: I exceed expectations for all those I serve.
  • Be NSC: I collaborate across NSC with trust and respect to achieve NSC results.

Employees celebrated our annual BeNSC Awards Celebration in June 2023 which was hosted onsite in all three of our NSC office locations. We host monthly in-person engagements through our All-Staff and leadership meetings. Senior Leaders and People Managers meet every other month to engage in collaborative discussions that allow us to focus on our impact and growth within the safety space. The NSC Speakers Bureau features more than 20 safety leaders and experts who speak at conferences, webinars, trainings and more to share their expertise with partners, members and other external organizations to forward the Council’s mission.

We continue to leverage an online recognition dashboard to celebrate and recognize one another for our many accomplishments – recognition posts link back to our values, as we acknowledge our employees for embodying those values in the work that they do.

Our Finances

Throughout 2023, NSC saw its finances increase compared to 2022. NSC revenues – supported by donors, government grants and membership dues – have demonstrated a sense of confidence in the Council’s work and our commitment to safety.

As a mission-driven nonprofit organization, revenue from our programs, services and philanthropic donations fuel our advocacy work so we can help people live their fullest lives. For a breakdown of our financials, please explore the NSC 2023 Statement of Financial Position and NSC 2023 Statement of Activities and Changes in Net Assets.

Driven by Data

NSC compiles Injury Facts®the definitive guide on preventable deaths and injuries in the United States for nearly 100 years.

Supported by Philanthropy

As a nonprofit organization, philanthropy generates new opportunities and sustains our relentless focus in making our world safer, from the workplace to anyplace.

In 2023, NSC received more than $6.5 million in philanthropic contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations wanting to make a difference. These funds support research to identify leading causes of fatalities, education to increase awareness and minimize risks, and advocacy to ensure the adoption of safety and incident prevention measures.

From the Workplace to Anyplace

Workplace fatality rates have dramatically decreased since 1928, but improvement in the last decade has mostly stalled. Nearly 4,700 workers still died from preventable incidents in 2022 and medically consulted injuries totaled more than 4.5 million– a 5% increase from the previous year. NSC enables employers of all sizes to create a culture of safety that goes beyond compliance because compromising safety should never be part of getting the job done.

Every family, individual and business in this country relies on our nation’s roadways to get to their destination safely. Yet we lost more than 44,000 people on our roads in 2023. NSC works to address what causes these crashes and to better understand the role people, vehicles, road design, technology and crash response resources play in roadway safety.
