In 2023, we made an impact on roadway safety

  • Facilitated the introduction of the Building Safer Streets Act legislation, in partnership with the Office of Senator John Fetterman, to update street design standards and make way for innovative street designs that enhance safety
  • Published an evaluation study of the NSC Impairment Recognition and Response Training for Supervisors in The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine
  • Secured funding for the Check To Protect vehicle recall campaign from BMW of North America, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Nissan North America, Stellantis, Toyota Motor North America and Volvo Car USA
  • Introduced the Road to Zero Resolution, in partnership with Families for Safe Streets, Consumer Reports and Vision Zero, to highlight the public health crisis on our nation’s roadways and commit to ending roadway fatalities by 2050
  • Led legislative efforts in Washington, Connecticut and Massachusetts to encourage elected officials at the state and federal levels to support Check To Protect and vehicle recall efforts
  • Launched a new feature on the Check To Protect website to enable license plate photo uploads to check for vehicle safety recalls
  • Awarded three federal pass-through grants totaling over $900,000 to expand the Our Driving Concern employer traffic safety program
  • Received $243,000 in funding from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) to support child passenger safety programs
  • Created the DriveItHOME mobile phone application, in partnership with General Motors, as a resource for parents with driving-age teens
  • Amplified NHTSA’s efforts during National Vehicle Safety Recalls Week with a Check To Protect outreach campaign to raise awareness about the importance of checking for vehicle recalls
  • Conducted booster seat and car seat education at elementary schools in Indiana and Florida, distributing booster and car seats to families in need, with funding from Honda USA Foundation
  • Reached more than 750,000 employees across the state of Texas through trainings, webinars, presentations and exhibits from the Our Driving Concern program
  • Launched the redesigned Child Passenger Safety on School Buses National Training curriculum for Child Passenger Safety Technicians and student transportation providers to increase knowledge and skills specific to transporting children on school buses
  • Released a new Car Seat Basics for Law Enforcement National Training curriculum to equip officers to take an active role in assessing car seat use
  • Launched Safety Connection, a virtual resource center in the Child Passenger Safety Learning Portal for caregivers, employers and certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians in underserved and underrepresented populations
  • Hosted 15 DriveItHOME virtual statewide parent nights, with funding from Honda, to provide resources for parents involved in the driver education process
  • Received funding from Honda to host a National Teen Driver Safety Week campaign that raised awareness and provided resources for partners, parents and community members
  • Convened a Road to Zero working group of road safety professionals and researchers across multiple disciplines to understand the implications of increasing the size and mass of vehicles on road safety
  • Partnered with the Texas Impaired Driving Task Force, the Permian Basin Strategic Partnership and the Austin Public Health Partnership Impaired Driving Action Team to promote employer traffic safety
  • Hosted quarterly pediatric vehicular heatstroke stakeholder meetings to support networking among partners and identify new countermeasures to eliminate preventable deaths
  • Partnered with organizations representing tribal communities to offer Child Passenger Safety Technician courses and resources to support American Indian/Alaska Native programs
