MAKING PEOPLE SAFER, TOGETHER

Safety is not something any of us can do alone. At NSC, we believe none of us are safe until all of us understand and lean into our roles in preventing injuries and fatalities. As America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate, we strive every day to build the connections, communities and partnerships that can help save lives.

Throughout 2023, the National Safety Council continued our century-long legacy of leading and fostering the national conversation on safety. Over the year our membership programs connected students with mentors, training and scholarships. We united survivor advocates and policymakers to introduce legislation that will lead to safer roads and communities. We brought together creative minds and industry leaders to introduce new innovations, strategies and solutions.

In this report, you’ll find examples of how we harnessed the power of connection to forward our mission, as well as a snapshot of our 2023 work to:

  • Introduce federal legislation for safer workplaces and roadways. With our advocacy partners, NSC facilitated the introduction of two pieces of federal legislation – the WORK to Save Lives Act and the Building Safer Streets Act – to help employers prepare for overdose emergencies and enhance safety measures on our nation’s roads.
  • Build new partnerships to expand scholarship funding. NSC is committed to promoting the safety profession and engaging with students through a variety of scholarships. The Council launched new partnerships with Chemours, Amentum, Jacobs and UPS to fund even more scholarship opportunities for students of all backgrounds who are pursuing professions in the safety field.
  • Promote innovation and technology as pillars of a safety and health workplace strategy. NSC understands the importance of incorporating new technologies to make workplaces safer. This year, the Council held the inaugural Future of EHS event in Long Beach, CA, that brought together business leaders, EHS professionals, researchers and problem-solvers for an open exchange of safety innovations and best practices.
  • Reinforce the strong connection between safety and diversity, equity and inclusion. For years, NSC has worked to emphasize the importance of diversity in the safety field. NSC conducted cutting-edge research that explored the link between DEI and physical safety and provided critical insights to help employers make all employees safer.
  • Provide new training and education resources to help save lives. The Council continues to offer a variety of virtual and in-person training and educational resources. We strive to update content regularly and create new courses to better fit organizational and individual needs to reduce injuries and build a safety culture.
  • Remain America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate. We are grateful to the individuals, corporations and foundations who contributed more than $6.5 million in 2023 to make a difference in people’s lives. Every dollar raised, from philanthropic donations to training resources revenue, is reinvested back into our lifesaving mission.

Each of these accomplishments represent a vast network of people NSC has helped make safer, and who can now use their safety knowledge and training to help make their co-workers, families and loved ones safer. At the Council, we’ll continue expanding this legion of lifesavers as we endeavor to fulfill our mission of saving lives, from the workplace to anyplace.

Overall total of lives saved*

* Between 1912 and 2022, unintentional-injury deaths per 100,000 population were reduced 17% from 82.4 to 68.3. The reduction in the overall rate during a period when the nation’s population has more than tripled has resulted in nearly 7,000,000 fewer people being killed due to preventable injuries than there would have been if the rate had not been reduced.
